The Public Appointments Committee says it will forward the names of confirmed candidates for ambassadorial and high commissioner positions to the Office of the President and Cabinet for formal communication.
The development follows the commencement of confirmation hearings by the committee, which is mandated to vet and confirm senior government officials, diplomats and statutory board directors.
On Tuesday, the committee conducted confirmation hearings for several nominees to diplomatic posts.
The nominees included Benedicto Wokomaatani Malunga as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Dr Edward Sawerengera as Ambassador to the United States of America, Dr Yusuf Aufi as High Commissioner to the Republic of Kenya, and Dr Evans Mwatabwa as Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Dr Sawerengera said if confirmed , his confirmation presents an opportunity to strengthen bilateral relations between Malawi and the United States.
He added that Malawi should increase agricultural production to enable the country to access American markets and expand its export base.
Committee chairperson Felix Njawala said the approved names will be submitted to the Office of the President and Cabinet for further processing.
The committee is expected to continue with confirmation hearings on Wednesday for additional nominees, including Robert Dafter Salama as High Commissioner to South Africa, Prof Patrick Makina as High Commissioner to Zambia, David Nungu as High Commissioner to Zimbabwe, and Reynolds Mangisa as High Commissioner to Mozambique.
