Authorities in Thyolo are investigating the death of a man, identified as Owen Matchowa, who was allegedly assaulted to death by guards at Naming’omba tea estate in the district.
Reports indicate that Matchowa who until his death was a driver, together with his assistant were suspected of stealing logs at the estate by the guards.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Douglas Moffat District Commissioner for Thyolo district, said his office in conjunction with the Officer in Charge for Thyolo police are investigating the matter to establish the truth.
Moffat has said they will engage with Naming’omba tea estate management and the police.
Meanwhile, Sylvester Namiwa- a human rights advocate, has condemned the barbaric acts of the guards saying taking the law in one’s hands is unlawful in the country.
Namiwa has since called on law enforcers to treat the matter with urgency and also that the management of Nmaing’omba tea estate should compensate the bereaved family.
