The UTM party has expressed concern over what it describes as struggles of tobacco farmers citing low prices and exploitation.
A recent visit to Chinkhoma Auction Floors revealed farmers’ frustration with prices as low as $1.20/kg, despite global prices around $8/kg.
UTM President Dalitso Kabambe has meanwhile criticized the situation, stating that farmers struggle to produce tobacco, generating foreign exchange, yet struggle to make ends meet.
Kabambe also accused top government officials of benefiting from the foreign exchange while farmers suffer.
Kabambe called for a review of the fertilizer supply chain, citing stable global prices and tripped local prices.
