The UTM party has pledged to prioritize the welfare of Malawians by reintroducing the fertilizer subsidy program once voted into power on 16th September general elections.
This was said as UTM continues with campaign whistle stop rallies in Lilongwe Rural as yesterday they had time at Matapila, Chitepwere and William Murray ground.
UTM has cited the country’s dire economic situation, with 91% joblessness, 75% living below the poverty line and 65% struggling with hunger every year.
Speaking to MIJ Online Dalitso Kabambe President for UTM indicated that it is the duty of any government to look after its people, particularly in a country like Malawi where the majority of the population is struggling to access basic necessities like food and nutrition.
Kabambe highlighted the plight of malnourished children and the need for social protection programs that address the root causes of poverty.
He further drew a comparison with Western countries, where social protection programs focus on the elderly, but argued that in Malawi, the focus should be on those living below the poverty line.
Meanwhile Kabambe has stressed that ensuring people have access to food is a basic necessity and that the fertilizer subsidy program is a crucial step towards revitalizing agriculture and addressing hunger.
