Producers and actors behind Welcome to Maula Prison film dominated the inaugural 2025 Malawi Film Awards organised by the Film Association of Malawi.
Amos Sekandiana, popularly known as Jaliwa, and Michelle Chirwa won Best Actor and Best Actress respectively in the People’s Choice Awards.
Blessings Mwambo scooped both Best Upcoming Actor and Best Supporting Actor, while Mzati Muheziwa was named Best Upcoming Actress.
Welcome to Maula Prison also walked away with the Best Feature Film award, with producer Kendal Kamwendo thanking Malawians for voting for the film.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prophetess Mary Bushiri of the Prophet Bushiri Foundation and Goshen City, the main sponsors of the awards, said the foundation is committed to supporting the creative industry to reach the global stage.
She noted that film has the power to change Africa’s narrative and that excellence in production attracts opportunities that can drive economic growth.
Film Association of Malawi president Dorothy Kingston thanked stakeholders for successfully organising the event and pledged to return next year with a bigger and improved awards ceremony.
Meanwhile, South African actor Xolisa Xaluva, who attended the awards and gala, appealed to the private sector to support the growth of Malawi’s film industry and help shape Africa’s story.
