Authorities have urged people living near protected areas like national parks to avoid farming close to park boundaries in order to reduce human – wildlife conflict.
The advice comes after Ackim Kumwenda, Parliamentarian for Mzimba West raised a concern that his area has recorded two deaths resulted from wild animal attacks, this year alone.
According to Kumwenda, 21 hectares of crops were also destroyed in communities surrounding Vwaza Game Reserve in Mzimba district.
In response, Joseph Nkosi, Spokesperson Department of National Parks and Wildlife urged people against cultivating close to game reserves.
Speaking to MIJ Online Nkosi said fences are being constructed around game reserves and national parks to address the challenge.
