Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile says he will challenge President Hakainde Hichilema’s re-election in court, alleging serious irregularities in the August 13 presidential election.
Mundubile, who finished second, said his campaign had documented concerns surrounding the conduct, counting, transmission and declaration of the results. The Electoral Commission of Zambia declared Hichilema the winner with about 60% of the vote, compared with approximately 38% for Mundubile.
The election was largely peaceful but was disrupted by incidents including attacks on election officials and the theft of ballot papers, prompting a temporary suspension of vote counting. International observers also raised concerns about aspects of the electoral process.
Mundubile’s legal challenge now places Zambia’s electoral process under renewed scrutiny. His case will depend on whether he can provide sufficient evidence to demonstrate that the alleged irregularities materially affected the outcome.
The challenge comes as tensions remain high following the election, including the arrest of opposition figures and concerns raised by the United Nations over due process.
