A solution-centred journalism think-tank has challenged journalists to report accurately on Sexual Reproductive Health Rights — SRHR to promote awareness and advocacy.
Reports indicate SRHR issues are being under-reported in spite of sexual reproductive matters being enormous.
For instance, Brian Ligomeka — executive director for Center for Solutions Journalism says research shows that abortion is a significant public health issue in Malawi, with women experiencing complications occupying about 60% of gynecology beds.
“It means; the media needs to do a lot in responsibly reporting on SRHR issues to improve health outcomes for women and girls in the country,” he said.
To achieve this, Ligomeka said, of their part Center for Solutions Journalism was training media professionals to build their capacity in reporting about sexual reproductive health rights.
Meanwhile, Jacqueline Kaminyu, post abortion care coordinator at Machinga District Hospital has singled out limited access to safe abortion services and stigma as some of the headline challenges.
However, she has told MIJ Online the district has made progress in providing post-abortion care services courtesy of comprehensive services that were being rendered within the available resources towards reducing maternal mortality in district and beyond.
