Minister of health, Khumbize Chiponda has confirmed that the Omicron variant of Covid-19 has now been registered in Malawi.
Chiponda says the cases involve three people based in Lilongwe.
She however says the three are asymptomatic and are on self-isolation.
The Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19 has indicated that there has been an increase in new infections since November 29 this year and that new infections recorded in a day have hit double digits.
Chiponda, has also decried the continued relaxation in observing prevention measures, with increased public gatherings such as political rallies and weddings.
Chiponda has disclosed this at a media briefing in Lilongwe meant to, among others, update the nation on the current Covid-19 status, vaccine update and way forward.
She says as of today, five Covid-19 patients are admitted in treatment centres and that they are all unvaccinated.
The positivity has rose to 3.3 percent from less than 1 percent.
