The Human Rights Defenders Coalition risks having its registration cancelled after the NGO Regulatory Authority, NGORA, issued a 30-day notice of its intention to cancel the registration of the organisation.
NGORA has issued similar notices to thirty six non-governmental organisations over non-compliance with registration requirements.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Laston Chinkudzu, Public Relations Officer for NGORA, said the common issues prompting the Authority to consider cancelling the registration of the NGOs include failure to submit annual reports and audited financial statements.
Chinkudzu said other non-compliant NGOs have been issued either warnings or fines.
He said some of the organisations among the thirty six include the Human Rights Defenders Coalition, Citizens for Justice, Orphan Care Malawi Project, Orphan Widow AIDS Campaign Organisation and Farmers Forum for Trade and Social Justice.
