Experts have advised the government to tread carefully regarding calls for the country to import maize aimed at addressing food insecurity.
The International Food Policy Research Institute has urged the government to import maize to effectively address the hunger situation.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Ronald Chilumpha, a food security expert, described the call as untimely, noting that the government has been too relaxed in addressing the issue of food insecurity.
In his remarks, Greenson Nyirenda, an economic expert, emphasized the need for the government to tread carefully with the calls, as they come at a time when the country does not have enough foreign currency reserves.
Instead, Nyirenda has proposed the need to intensify maize production through irrigation farming.
