Tobacco Commission has urged players in the tobacco industry to invest in school infrastructure and provide teaching and learning materials in tobacco-growing areas to help keep children in school.
This comes as today Malawi joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Tobacco Growers Day.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Terephorus Chigwenembe Spokesperson for Tobacco Commission said the is stepping up efforts to eliminate child labour in the tobacco value chain.
According to Chigwenembe, one of the key strategies being promoted is supporting initiatives that encourage children to remain in school instead of working in the fields.
Chigwenembe further said ending child labour in tobacco estates does not only protect the rights and welfare of children but also helps to maintain the reputation and integrity of Malawi’s leaf on the global market.
