Concerns over increased number of street kids in Malawi

Child Rights activists have accused authorities for failing to relocate street connected children from the streets saying this is putting lives of the children at risk.

The remarks by Lucky Mbewe a Child Rights activist come barely days after Blantyre police rescued a street kid from an angry mob.

Reports indicated that the boy was apprehended by the angry mob after being suspected that he wanted to rob a man.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Mbewe accused authorities entrusted with the work of relocating the street connected children from the streets for failing to relocate these children.

According to Mbewe the current trend has the potential to put lives of the children at risk since people have started taking the law into their own hands.

Meanwhile, Mbewe has challenged the ministry of social welfare to release a detailed report of how it utilizes funds meant for relocation of street connected children.

“it has been over ten years since government has been coming up with initiatives aimed at relocated street kids. But nothing is seen on the ground as the population of the kids on the street keep on growing.” said Mbewe.

Meanwhile, the child rights activist has asked authorities from the ministry responsible to start presenting reports on how it is using funds meant for relocation of street connected children.

According to Reliefweb, poverty, family breakdown and HIV/AIDS are among the main reasons why children come onto the street in Malawi. It is estimated that 80 percent of the street children in Malawi are orphaned by HIV/AIDS.
