National Food Reserve Agency (NFRA) has downplayed fears of hunger in the country amid reports of insufficient maize stocks in its reserves.
According to the Agency, the country’s reserves have 62,000 Metric Tons of Maize against the recommended size of the Strategic Grain Reserve which is 217,000 metric tons.
Despite this, Dennis Kalekeni Board Chairperson for NFRA has assured the Nation that this is enough Maize to deal with any emergency that would hit the country.
He has however, disclosed that the Agency will in two weeks’ time start buying maize from farmers.
Meanwhile, the ministry of Agriculture has announced that Malawi has performed poorly in the efforts to end hunger by 2025.
Readwell Musopole, Deputy Director of Planning in the ministry of Agriculture has told MIJ Online that in the 3rd Biennial review report Malawi has scored 3.38 out of 10.
