Stakeholders have expressed concern over what they are describing as government’s failure to implement some policies aimed at promoting the rights of children in the country.
The worry comes as Malawi today joined the rest of the globe in commemorating International Day of the African Child.
This year the day is being observed under the theme, “Eliminating Harmful Practices Affecting Children.
Desmond Mhango Chairperson for NGO Coalition on Child Rights has told MIJ Online that authorities are yet to fully implement the Child Care, Protection and Justice Act of 2010, which among other things- it demands recruitment of child officers in all of the country’s districts.
But according to Mhango, this is yet to be achieved as there have not been any budgetary allocation specifically for the children affairs department.

Malawi Human Rights Commission has said, on Wednesday, it failed to hear the side of the officials from Kalibu academy on accusations of sexual harassment at the institution.
The commission has been conducting public inquiries into the matter, the remaining part was to hear from the officials at the institution after hearing from complaints a few weeks ago.
However, according to plans, the commission was on Wednesday expected to finalize its public inquiry by hearing from the respondents, but Sunduzwayo Madise Chairperson of the public hearing, told MIJ Online that the accused asked for more time to prepare.
Meanwhile, Madise said the commission is impressed with how the enquiry is progressing and he was confident that all processes will be concluded by mid-July, this year and a resolution will be communicated to the public.
