Issues on call ahead of UTM convention
As UTM is planning to hold its national elective conference, there are reports of bitter leadership struggles within the party.
The reports indicate that the party’s top brass is split over candidates vying for the presidency.
The party, founded by the late Dr. Saulos Chilima, is witnessing a three-way tussle for the presidency, threatening to derail its electoral prospects.
According to sources within the party, who opted for anonymity, the divisions within UTM are deeply rooted, with three distinct factions vying for control.
Firstly the Kabambe faction which is backed by founding members, Dr. Dalitso Kabambe who has the support of those working on the possible alliance with the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
Secondly there is Kambala faction: Newton Kambala, the party’s financier and founder, has been convinced by anti-Kabambe members to oppose the former DPP member’s bid.
And thirdly there is the Mtumbuka faction: Supporters of the late Dr. Chilima have persuaded Dr. Mathews Mtumbuka to enter the fray, further complicating the leadership landscape.
Meanwhile, the current President for UTM Michael Usi, who is also Malawi’s vice president, has adopted a wait-and-see approach, biding his time before making a move.
His silence is seen as a calculated strategy, waiting for the perfect moment to assert his claim to the leadership.
The UTM’s elective convention promises to be a contentious affair, with the party’s unity and electoral prospects hanging in the balance.
Can the party overcome its internal divisions and present a united front, or will the leadership struggle tear it asunder? The outcome will have far-reaching implications for Malawi’s political landscape.
