The Higher Education Students Loans and Grants Board says it has recovered K360 million from former loan beneficiaries during the first quarter of the 2026/27 financial year.
According to the statement by the board, the amount recovered is not enough to meet the growing demand for higher education financing.
However, Paul Padambo board’s Loans Recovery Director, said the recovery made during the first three months of the financial year is a positive step, but more former beneficiaries need to fulfil their repayment commitments.
Padambo stressed that the rising cost of higher education, particularly tuition fees in public universities, has increased pressure on available resources, making loan repayments crucial in expanding access to financial assistance.
He added that, the student loan scheme operates as a revolving fund, which requires former beneficiaries to repay their loans so that the system remains available for future students.
