The Ministry of Labour has called on the media to actively disseminate information on labour laws to improve compliance and awareness nationwide.
The appeal was made during a Decent Work Integrated Awareness Training for journalists in Lilongwe.
Goodlucky Kayange, the Ministry’s Acting Director of Occupation and Health, observed that the media is a powerful tool for shaping public opinion.
He therefore called for effective reporting on issues like workers’ compensation, occupational safety, and workplace gender equality.
Supporting this call, Johanes Mandowa, an expert with the EU Zantchito Skills Jobs Program, disclosed that the engagement aims to address a significant information gap.
He noted a widespread lack of knowledge among employees about their rights and a high rate of non-compliance with labour laws by employers.
Meanwhile, a media participant, Joseph Mazizi, commended the training, saying it provides journalists with the accurate information needed to report on labour issues.
