Over thirty die after Malawi’s devastating rainfall
The Department of Disaster and Management Affairs has disclosed that 33 people have died due to the recent moderate tropical storm Anna.
According to Dodma commissioner Charles Kalemba, as of 31 January, 20 people are missing due to floods of which 19 are from Chikwawa and 1 from Mwanza districts.
Kalemba further said 193,558 households have been hit affecting 1 million Malawians from 19 districts.
The commissioner has further indicated that so far there are 158 injuries registered from the same.
He also added that what hit Malawi in the past week was not tropical cyclone Anna but rather moderate tropical storm Anna.
However, he has indicated that the storm is unprecedented as some parts of the country registered almost 400 mm of rains in 24 hours comparing to 220 mm per 24 hours registered during cyclone Idai.
Meanwhile, the department is asking well-wishers to help victims with food, shelter, water and sanitation facilities, health, security, nutritious food and teaching and learning materials.
Meanwhile, the roads authority says the Chikwawa road will be accessible by close of business on Wednesday.
