REPORT: Renewable Energy in sight.

This week MIJ FM has focus on the Malawi Renewable Energy Strategy, a blueprint launched in 2017 to guide the nation in implementing Sustainable Development Goal Number 7, an ambitious policy promoting access to affordable, reliable and modern energy.

Goals of the Malawi Renewable Energy Strategy

  • To create a conducive environment for independent power producers.
  • Construct 50 mini-grids by 2025.
  • Maximize consumption of off grid solar power.
  • Increase sustainable use of biomass by marketing and selling over 3 million clean cockstoves by 2025.
  • Encourage sustainable use of fuels to minimize environmental pollution from vehicles.

However, six years down the line, the implementation of the Malawi Renewable Energy Strategy seems to be a mixed bag, with the nation excelling and lagging behind in some aspects.

So what are the challenges impeding Malawi from achieving targets of this ambitious strategy and what needs to be done to promote its success?

These are some of the questions, that our energy reporter Georgia Mbaghugho Chirombo is answering in her exclusive titled “A long walk to the energy freedom ‘’.
