Back as champs: Malawi Cricket Under19 side back home

They went, they saw and conquered. Now, the Malawi national women Under19 cricket team players are back from Rwanda where they won the International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup sub-region qualifiers.

The side marked an incredible clean slate by winning six-straight matches to make the grade for the final stage of qualification due in three weeks.

Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) board member said the girls have to be rest assured of support from the council ahead of the Division 1 Africa qualifiers next month.

On his part president of Cricket Malawi, Vivek Gansen, noted that after finishing fifth last time out, the side has managed to beat the odds and the mantle which is no mean achievement.

He said, they will also ensure that the girls are in shape ahead of the next assignments.

‘’We will also be urging the corporate world to assist. We are also aiming to popularize the game. The results here have been incredible,’ ’he said.

Among other landmarks, Malawi’s left-arm quick, Evah Kabwere, walked away with the best bowler award for her 15 wickets in six innings at an economy rate of 3.17.

Other star performers were captain Ketrina Maliamu Chingaipe and Esther Richard.
