The Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative has asked the ministry of finance and the public accounts committee of Parliament to consider a public enquiry before proceeding to make any payments to private firms who are claiming money amounting to 2 trillion for services offered to the government and some for breach of contracts.
This comes as media reports indicate that government is striving to raise the 2 trillion Malawian kwacha equivalent to the national budget to pay the private firms.
Speaking to MIJ Online, Sylvester Namiwa, Executive Director for the Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative said it is going to be disheartening to Malawians who are struggling to make ends meet to see their taxes being used to pay private firms yet Malawians are no longer accessing drugs and medical services in public health facilities.
Namiwa further warned that CDEDI will stand with Malawians in providing checks on the office of the Attorney General that is currently handling the claims.
