Concerns raised over prospects of a widening gender divide
Stakeholders have cited a continued lack of basic needs as one of the challenges making girls susceptible to various abuses including rape and failure to proceed with their education.
The concern by the Centre for Religion and Public Affairs (CRAPA) follows varied statuses that girls especially in rural areas are dropping out of schools due to among other things lack of school and sanitary materials.
According to Lukaya Kaloti, Community Mobilization Officer, poverty is leading to a high rate of school dropouts among girls, including premature pregnancies as the girls lack support in all forms.
She has also said that in their observations, sanitary materials are not easily accessed by girls in rural areas, a situation that sees them abscond classes.
Kaloti has therefore appealed to parents and stakeholders to take a pivotal role in ensuring that the girl child can access basic needs.
“It is the responsibility of parents and the nation at large to ensure that girl child can have sanitary facilities. If not, the consequences are numerous which may further widen the gap between males and females,’’ she said.
