The Mzuzu Youth Anti-Corruption Movement has warned that unless the country reduces demand for corruption when accessing various services, the fight against the vice will remain a fallacy.
This is according to Matthews Kajani team leader of the grouping who said the rise in cases of corruption, is a result of the deliberate creation of demand for the vice among service providers especially in public institutions.
Kajani said with corruption high when seeking various services, it is crucial to put to a stop its demand by among others inculcating a spirit of resentment towards the same among young people who are in majority in the country.
“If we are to win the fight against corruption we need young people who are in majority in the country to realize the cost of corruption on their future, and understand their role in its fight. Until the day that will happen, the fight against the vice will continue being fruitless” Kajani observed.
Meanwhile, Kajani has therefore called on various stakeholders to step their efforts in rooting out corruption by ensuring that even in communities people are made aware of the impact of corruption on delivery of quality social services.
“Currently corruption is more of our culture as a nation and the high levels of corruption we see in all sectors of society is a reflection of what we have become as a people. We therefore need to root out that culture right from our communities and only then will we say that we have began taking the right path in curbing the vice” Kajani said.
According to the Corruption Perception Index, as at 31 January 2023, corruption was cited as the most damaging of crucial enablers of progress, democracy and development in Malawi and other Sub-Saharan Africa countries.
