Players in the employment sector have underscored the need for partnership in ending child labour by investing in the education sector.
George Khakhi, Executive Director for the Employers Consultative Association of Malawi made the call during a breakfast meeting the association organized on Wednesday with stakeholders at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.
According to Khakhi, the meeting was aimed at engaging stakeholders in promoting public private partnership to eliminate child labour in support of education through sustainable corporate social responsibility engagements.
Speaking to MIJ Online, he attributed the continued rising cases of child labour to worsening poverty due to economic crises the nation is sailing through, and has since emphasized the need for sustainable investments to uplift the economic well-being of Malawians.
Meanwhile Limbani Nsapato, education rights campaigner and Country Director for Edukans, has suggested the need for proper guidance and policy direction in the implementation of corporate social responsibility efforts towards the education sector, to ensure all vulnerable children are being reached.
Nsapato who is also Chairperson of the Board of Civil Society Coalition said child labor remains a big burden for Malawi with over two million children estimated to be subjected to child labor according to data from the International labour Organization.
