Government commits to expanding access to modern energy
The Ministry of Energy has affirmed the government’s dedication to expanding the availability and dependability of modern energy in accordance with the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Sustainable Development Goal 7 prioritizes access to clean and cost-effective energy, recognizing its pivotal role in advancing agriculture, trade, telecommunications, education, healthcare, and transportation.

In an interview, Ibrahim Matola, Minister of Energy, emphasized his ministry’s commitment to supporting renewable energy initiatives in Malawi to bolster sustainable and affordable energy production for all citizens.
“There are many benefits in this energy space, but also when you look at the climate change issues, they are real. So we need to collaborate in order to take advantage of the readily clean energy sources” said Matola.
Matola further said the government has recently launched the Malawi e-cooking Road Map and the elimination of tariffs on electric vehicles and motorcycles, aiming to propel the nation towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future.

Meanwhile Sosten Chigalu, President of the Renewable Energy Industry Association of Malawi, says energy plays a pivotal role as an economic catalyst for development, underscoring the imperative for collective efforts among all stakeholders to propel the advancement of clean, sustainable, and affordable energy solutions.
“Malawi has access to electricity of about 19 percent, meaning that more people in Malawi do not have electricity. As you know energy is an economic driver to development therefore this global renewable center serves as a platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange on what challenges are there and also explore what opportunities are there in the energy sector” said Chigalu.
Stakeholders convened in Lilongwe for the Global Renewable Centre Workshop, engaging in robust discussions on topics including Minigrids and Distributed Generation, standalone solar financing, and the social and economic ramifications of Mini Grid deployment.
