Govt questioned on fiscal measures used in the last two years

The Opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) is proposing immediate resignation of the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi, Secretary to the Treasury and all other officials responsible for the wrong fiscal and monetary policy measures the country has been implementing in the past two years.

According to the Opposition Party, these policies have led to the current economic meltdown and suffering of Malawians.

“This is important so that public officers should be held to account when things go wrong under their watch and this is part of good governance and servant leadership.” Reads part of the Statement signed by Chimwemwe Chipungu Party’s National Organizing Secretary.

Adding to the austerity measures outlined by President Chakwera, the Party is proposing to Chakwera to trim the size of his cabinet to no more than 20 and his advisors to 5 and below.

Further, DPP is proposing that Chakwera should have his foreign and domestic travels suspended for the rest of the year with the exception of critical travels only.

Furthermore, DPP wants Diplomats to Malawi embassies abroad downsized to no more than 5 per embassy.

Meanwhile, the party also says it wants the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to investigate the hiring of a jet that President Lazarus Chakwera used to travel on his Switzerland and Guinea trip, a task the party wants to be done in three weeks.

The DPP which is accusing President Chakwera of being dishonest on the matter, says it is not true that government spent only K300 million on the trips.

“The DPP has evidence that hiring of the jet that the President used (Dassault Falcon 900B) cost at least USD450,000, which is about K450 million. DPP has further information that in fact the jet was hired by an undisclosed well-wisher. The DPP therefore demands that government reveals the identity and intent of the well-wisher.” Said Chimwemwe Chipungu Party’s Secretary General.

According to Chipungu, ACB should investigate this as it is a clear signal of bribery and corruption.
