The Ministry of Education, Science and technology has embarked on an initiative aimed at equipping secondary school students with vocational and entrepreneurship skills for socio-economic growth.
According to Director of administration at the ministry, Hillary Namainja, it is high time that students in secondary school got prepared thoroughly for life after school.
“As we are getting to higher education we should not only think about the blue collar or white collar jobs, but we should also prepare our students so that they become businessmen” said Namainja.
Namainja added that Mzuzu government is one of the twelve schools that has benefitted from the re-introduction of technical subjects with an aim of preparing students for life after school.
“We have about 12 secondary schools in the country that provide technical subjects, in the past we used to have such subjects but because but because of passage of time most of the equipment deteriorated” added Namainja.
Namainja was speaking when standard Bank, handed over classroom blocks worth forty six million kwacha to Mzuzu government secondary school.
Speaking after donating the classroom blocks, Standard Bank Chief Financial Officer Temwani Simwaka said the bank is committed to support education in the country apart from offering scholarships to secondary school students.
“As a bank, we will support education and in partnership with Press Trust we will pay their fees for the entire four years at secondary school” said Simwaka.
Meanwhile head teacher for Mzuzu government secondary school, Vincent Mudolo said the school has qualified teachers and ready to start teaching technical subjects.
