A Network of civil society organizations under the banner Action Against Presidential Immunity has notified Mzuzu city council of its intention to hold peaceful demonstrations on 28 July 2022.
The development follows the expiry of a two-week ultimatum which center for democracy and economic development initiatives gave Chakwera to direct the law commission and the attorney general to start the process of amending section 91 of the republican constitution as one way of honoring his pledge of trimming presidential powers.
According to Gomezgani Nkhoma, chairperson of Mzuzu youth Caucus and a lead organizer, the planned demonstrations will start at Katoto secondary school ground to Mzuzu civic offices where a petition will be presented to the chief executive officer.
Nkhoma said they want Chakwera to scrap the presidential immunity as a means of ending corruption in the country.
However recently the State House said President Chakwera will deal with the laws regarding powers he has at the appropriate time.
