Some historians in the country have pushed on authorities to explore combining the commemoration of Independence Day public holidays with comparable holidays such as Martyrs Day, Kamuzu Day, and John Chilembwe Day.
Thungani Mzaza, a prominent historian, told MIJ Online that these public festivals are all centered on the same themes, which include African liberation and the desire for national freedom.
Mzaza also advocated establishing a National Heritage Day to unify all of these public holidays, claiming that the cancellation of this year’s Independence Day celebrations is an indication that the value of the day has changed 62 years down the line.
This year’s Independence Day celebrations were cancelled as the funds meant for the invent were diverted to other important issues of national interest.
