There are fears that people in Machinga North East constituency, may face hunger, MIJ Online has learnt.
Speaking to MIJ Online Senior Chief Nyambi said this is due to low production which has come as a result of an outbreak of fall arms worms.
In the wake of the fears, the traditional leaders have sounded a call for help through their Member of Parliament, Ajilu Richard Kalitendere.
Kalitendere has since assured the communities that he will push the authorities to develop plans meant to cushion people out of the feared food shortage situation.
‘’This is a sad situation. As a lawmaker, I have to bring this before stakeholders to avoid any loss of life’’ he said.
Earlier this year, it was estimated that fall armyworms have destroyed 144,000 hectares of crops affecting 467,000 farmers across Malawi.
According to the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) report on food security for 2021-2022 has revealed that at least 1.5 million people need food assistance as they are likely to be food insecure.
The decrease in production was due to increased agriculture production as a result of good rainfall distribution and increased access to fertilizer and improved seed.
