‘Interns facing unprecedented levels of sexual harassment’

The Malawi Congress of Trade Union MCTU says there is an increase of reported cases of sexual harassment in work places in which interns are largely the victims.

Ching’oma: The situation is worrying.

According to the MCTU, on average annually it receives about 500 employment related complaints out of which 70 percent are sexual harassment cases.

The cases were reported in both private and public institutions.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Jessie Ching’oma Deputy Director for Malawi Congress of Trade Union said the figures expose worrisome levels of exploitation among workers.

Ching’oma has also stated that they have found that some institutions create dubious fields and some office parties only to sexually exploit workers including those doing internship.

She has however indicated that, currently employees have garnered courage and are now being able to report most of violence and sexual harassments which has helped the institution to be able to have statistics on concerns being raised.

” This situation means that there is need to create more awareness campaigns on the International Labour Organisations C190 requirements which aim at taming such incidents in work places, ” she said.
