A grouping known as Concerned Citizens says nationwide demonstrations which were slated for 10th July 2024, have been halted due to a plea from various stakeholders, parents and guardians on fears the demos would disturb the ongoing Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) examinations.
Leader of the grouping Edwards Kambanje, said that the decision does however not entail a permanent stop of their plans given that the issues they are raising remain an eyesore for Malawians.
He said they have in recent days been receiving concerns from Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC), parents, school owners and concerned stakeholders to reconsider the timing of their demonstrations.
“In the spirit of unity, the Civil Society Education Coalition (CSEC), ISAMA, parents, and numerous stakeholders nationwide have engaged with us to request the postponement of our planned demonstrations during this critical period of MSCE examinations,” he said.
In the run up to the demonstrations, , the grouping has spoken against the high cost of living and economic challenges, characterizing Malawi as a country stuck in stagnation.
On his part, Vice chairperson of the grouping Oliver Nakoma said: ‘’ We have emphasized our commitment to peaceful protest and democratic engagement, acknowledging the importance of education and the need to avoid any harm to students,’’.
