The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has revealed that Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) face widespread systemic discrimination in accessing essential services, despite existing legal protections.
The MHRC’s report on Public Inquiry on Access to Services for Persons with Disabilities has shown barriers Persons with Disabilities encounter in health, education, employment, disaster management and political participation.
The report released today has called for a multisectoral approach to address these issues, recommending improvements such as accessible infrastructure, staff training and inclusive policies.
It has further recommended recruiting specialist teachers, enforcing employment quotas and ensuring accessible voting processes.
Justice Gloria Namonde – Chairperson of the Public Inquiry has stressed that promoting inclusive development requires dismantling these barriers arguing that this is key to ensure that Persons with Disabilities can also access services equitably.
