Malawi prioritizes worker protection in labour export deals

The Malawi government has reiterated the importance of signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) to safeguard the rights of workers exported to other countries.

This comes as Malawi continues to export labour to countries like Israel.

The stakeholders pose after the interface.

To enhance the management of labour migration, Malawi is hosting a coaching session on labour migration for labour officers in Lilongwe.

The session, organized by GIZ, aims to promote decent work and protect workers’ rights.

Speaking to MIJ Online Chikondano Mussa, Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Labour, emphasized the need for MOUs to ensure workers are guaranteed decent working conditions.

And on his part, Aly Cisse, a consultant in migration issues from Senegal, echoed Mussa’s sentiments, stressing that promoting decent work is crucial globally.

“Decent work is key in the world, and we need to prioritize it,” Cisse said.

The coaching session and the government’s emphasis on MOUs demonstrate Malawi’s commitment to protecting its citizens working abroad and promoting fair labour practices.

By prioritizing decent work and safeguarding workers’ rights, Malawi aims to ensure that its labour export program benefits both the country and its workers.
