High expectations have been raised on the potential for the country to secure new energy investors by utilizing the upcoming annual meeting of the Association of Power Utilities of Africa-APUA.
The sentiments comes as Electricity Generation Company EGENCO will this year host the meeting here in Malawi at Bingu International Conference Center in Lilongwe from 3rd to 9th June 2023
APUA, formerly designated as the Union of Power Producers and Distributors in Africa (UPDEA), was established in 1970 with its headquarters in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.
The meeting brings together power and energy players from Africa and other continents to deliberate on matters affecting the energy sector.

The purpose of the meetings is to take stock of the activities carried out over the one year period, to discuss the status of scientific activities, projects and reforms implemented and projected in the sector, as well as to promote the activities of member companies in developing of the sector.
William Liabunga-Chief Executive Officer for EGENCO told MIJ FM that the meetings which will attract CEOs and technocrats from power utilities across Africa, presents an opportunity for Malawian to hold talks with energy investors in attendance on solutions to improve power generation.
“I think as a country in which we are still developing in our power sector, this provides an opportunity that we expose ourselves to the investors because much as it is an annual general meeting, but there will also have investors coming from China, the sponsors like the Africa Development Bank will also be coming.” Said Liabunya.
EGENCO disclosed that among many other things, the event will also give a special focus on the Strategic leadership and the governance of the power sector.
During the annual meeting, CEOs of power utility companies are expected to have an open exchange with APUA main sponsor, the AfDB Vice Presidency on E n e r g y , E l e c t r i c i t y , Green Growth and Climate on the right transition for Africa and determine quick win projects to be launched.
