Malawians in South Africa set huge welcome for the Queens

Malawians living in South Africa have set out a massive welcome for the Malawi national netball team which is due to arrive there tomorrow ahead of the Netball World Cup.

The Queens are due to leave Malawi in the next 24 hours to compete at the highly anticipated competition which will be played from 28 July to 6 August 2023 at the International Convention Centre of Cape Town in South Africa.

Meanwhile, the Malawian community in South Africa says they will give the team a spirited and befitting welcome upon arrive at OR Tambo Airport.

Dr Nyirenda: The team deserves this treat.

Speaking to MIJ Online, Dr Thomas Nyirenda Chairman of the Malawians Association in Cape Town said the community has decided to do as such so as to induce a spirt of hard work in the team.

‘’ We are looking forward to proudly receiving the team at Cape Town International Airport later in the afternoon this Friday. We want the team to be assured of massive support throughout the competition, ‘’said Nyirenda.

According to Nyirenda, the Malawi Embassy in South Africa is also urging Malawians living in South Africa to cheer the team in its matches.

The Queens have been camping at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe and have played in six World Netball Championships, with their highest finish being fifth place in 2007.

During the 2019 finals in Liverpool, England, the Queens finished on sixth position.

The Queens are in Group B of the global showpiece alongside third-ranked England, 10th-placed Scotland and 14th-ranked Barbados.

Malawi will begin their campaign against Scotland on July 28 before taking on England on July 29. They will wind up their group fixtures with a tie against Barbados on July 30.

The squad scheduled to leave the country is as follows:

Midcourt-Takondwa Lwazi, Thandi Galeta, Martha Dambo

Defenders– Grace Mwafulirwa, Towera Vinkhumbo, Laureen Ngwira, Madalitso Mkandawire.
