The UTM and MCP alliance negotiation teams are facing calls to put their interests aside if the parties are to have a successful agreement on an alliance.
The call comes at a time after the two parties confirmed to have started talks meant to reach an alliance as the ordered fresh presidential elections loom.
The two parties were petitioners in the case that led to the order for a fresh presidential election.
In its recent communication, the Malawi Congress Party confirmed to have given its leader Lazarus Chakwera a mandate to institute a negotiation team.
On Sunday, UTM leader Saulos Chilima despite being coy on the matter advised the party followers in Mzuzu to wait for communication from the party on the matter.
The developments follow a recently announced alliance between the ruling Democratic Progressive Party and the United Democratic Front.
But in reaction to the latest developments, political scholars have suggested that the two parties have all the time to make an informed decision and must approach the agreements with sober minds.
University of Livingstonia based expert George Phiri said in an interview that the delay to form an alliance between the two parties has come as the two seem not to agree on who is to lead the alliance.
Phiri has since suggested the need for the two sides to review the strength and weaknesses of each leader and take a non-partisan approach on who must lead the alliance if they are to achieve desired results.
‘The main challenge lying between the two parties is leadership. In my view, the main problem lies on who is to lead the alliance, I wish all people involved become non-partisan to be objective,’’ said Phiri.
Going forward, Phiri has urged the UTM and MCP to understand that the main idea is not to sustain which party but rather amass more support in the forthcoming presidential elections.
