The National Congress Movement has delivered a petition to the Mbelwa district council demanding President Lazarus Chakwera’s resignation ahead of three days scheduled protest in Mzuzu.
However, there is uncertainty about the proposed three days of protest as officials from the district council and security agency are against the move.
One of the officials we spoke to, questioned the timing of protesting for three days, arguing that it poses a security threat to the city residents.

But in an interview with MIJ Online Gomezgani Nkhoma, the Northern region Chairperson for the movement said the protests are on from Wednesday as they will be waiting for a response from the head of state.
“What has come out of the meeting is that the Police and DC are saying that three days are just too much saying they’re incapacitated, they can’t manage to control the crowd for three consecutive days,” said Nkhoma.
Nkhoma indicated that they cannot hold the protest for a day adding that the least they can do is two days as requested by other stakeholders.
“We are proceeding with the demonstrations because they are saying that even on Wednesday we can go on the streets but they will give us the direction on the number of days to protest,” added Nkhoma.
Meanwhile, a representative from the Mbelwa district council has promised the movement to deliver the petition to relevant authorities for action.
Recently, President Chakwera acknowledged several economic challenges that Malawians are facing but promised that his administration is working around the clock to address them.
The movement wants Chakwera to resign for allegedly failing to meet the expectations of Malawians in face of endemic corruption and multiple crises that have forced the economy to its knees.
The peaceful demonstrations will start from the Katoto secondary school ground, through the highway to the Mzuzu High court roundabout, and then return using the same route to Katoto Secondary School.
Meanwhile, Ben Longwe, Commander in Chief has disclosed that the protests will not take place in Lilongwe, Blantyre, Zomba Mangochi, Karonga, and Nsanje, and that new dates will be communicated later.
