MRA settles tax refunds to tobacco farmers

The Malawi Revenue Authority has paid six billion nine hundred and fifty million kwacha to eleven thousand tobacco farmers through withholding tax refunds.

The revelation has been made as the authority is paying out withholding tax refunds to tobacco farmers for tax deducted in their sales.

In a interview with MIJ Online, John Biziwick commissioner general for the authority said the payment is of arrears dating back to five years.

Biziwick however said the authority is having challenges to process some payments as most farmers bank accounts are dormant and are only used for tobacco seasons.

Meanwhile Chidanti Malunga, Chief Executive Officer for the Tobacco Commission has commended the authority for remitting the funds to tobacco farmers.
