Authorities in Nsanje district have underscored the importance of disaster preparedness ahead of the rainy season.
Edison Njembe, Gender Officer for Nsanje District Council was speaking during a training of emergency protection committees by a local organisation-Kuchene Women Forum.
Njembe observed that challenges such as lack of privacy for families living in disaster camps still remain and there is need for the committees to assist in addressing them by among other things mobilizing family tents.
Mary Namalomba, Executive Director for the Kuchene Women Forum said they equipped the protection committees-who include social workers and victim support officers-with knowledge in how best to assist communities during disasters.
Namalomba also commended Action Aid Malawi for funding the three days meeting saying it was crucial in the protection of people’s lives when disaster strikes.
