Old Mutual donates to Red Cross in Cyclone Freddy response
Old Mutual Malawi has donated K60 million to Malawi Red Cross Society to support people affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy.
According to Mutual Malawi Limited plc chief finance officer Vera Zulu, is part of supporting communities in times of crisis, but also the impressions they have in the role of Red Cross.
“We hope to contribute to the important work being done by Red Cross Malawi, as they continue to provide rescue services, emergency shelter, food, water, and other critical supplies to those affected by the cyclone,’’ she said.
She also disclosed that Old Mutual through its subsidiary, Mthunzi Funeral Services, has extended an offer to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital for usage of 50 percent of its mortuary services.
In responding to the donation, Felix Washoni, Malawi Red Cross Society communications and resource mobilization specialist thanked Old Mutual for the donation saying the money will help to save lives.
“This will go a long way to go towards providing the much-needed support to the communities affected. We are happy that Old mutual has come in to assist us We are also happy that you decided to channeled the money to Red Cross These resources will be put to good use,” said Washoni.
So far, the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) says the death toll due to cyclone Freddy has risen from 190 to 225.
The department further states that thus far number of people who have injured has reached 707with 41 others reported missing.
Meanwhile, the department, humanitarian partners and councils continue to facilitate the provision of relief assistance to affected and displaced households, with search and rescue operations led by the Malawi Defence Force, the Malawi Police Service, the Department of Marine, the Malawi Red Cross Society and communities.
