Old Mutual on quest to unlock women’s potential

Out of a usual office meeting comes an aspiration to empower women at a workplace –not with finance but leadership service.

The introduction of a leadership development program called ‘Pink Potential’ by Old Mutual Company Limited becomes a game-changer to unlocking leadership barriers at the financial institution.

Empowered!

The initiative brings together 33 female employees for a one year training on diverse aspects focusing on leadership development, improved performance, and building confidence in the workplace.

Chief Finance Officer at Old Mutual Company Limited, Vera Zulu described the initiative as a drive to advance gender equity through unravelling leadership barriers in a society.

‘‘It is our passion to help women rise. This program empowers women through training which is a critical step towards achieving gender equity,’ said Zulu.

Zulu: We need to take this path.

She said the program would equip the female employees to take diverse leadership roles.

‘I’m excited that the programme will break the leadership barriers that make women to look inferior to men. By the end of this initiative, our female employees would see the world in a new perspective,’ Zulu highlighted.

The program is being facilitated by an expert in growth strategy, international business and human capital strategies, Sarah Richson of Richemele International Consultants from Kenya.

Richson said the Pink Potential programme would uplift the confidence of women through getting various leadership tools.

‘The program is not a one hit wonder, but it will develop a holistic woman leader for the future of the organization,’ said Richson.

Furthermore, she indicated that the initiative will help the women to keep a balance the many hearts they wear, and navigating them effectively.

On her part, one of the trainees, Rita Shaba who works as a business analyst at Old Mutual said the program will help to get her to leadership positions.

‘I do know that my technical knowledge alone cannot get me to leadership positions. So this program will help me to bridge that gap between leadership position and my technical skills,’ said Shaba.

The initiative was launched on 18 March 2026 drawing together female employees from various business units at Old Mutual Limited Company.

Upon the completion of the training, the 33 employees will each receive a certificate of completion.
