Parley summons ministry of agriculture officials over ‘controversial’ fertilizer deal

The Parliamentary committee on Agriculture has summoned ministry of agriculture for the ministry to clear itself from doubts surrounding the validity of fertilizer supply deal with a Romanian firm, East Bridge Estate SRL.

The committee will also meet officials from Smallholder Farmers Fertilizer Revolving Fund of Malawi -SFFRFM starting from Monday.

Through its chairperson -Sameer Suleiman the committee says Malawians need to know the truth behind the deal because it raises a lot of eyebrows.

The parliamentarian also claims that the agreement was made in absence of officials from the said firm which specializes on medical import.

“How would a such multi dollar deal signed in absence of any official from the company. How authentic is this. Instead, a local lawyer who is also implicated in corrupt crimes here signed on behalf of the company,” claims Suleiman.

Suleiman who is also the whistle blower of last year’s AIP saga has therefore threatened that the committee will bar government from proceeding with the multi-billion-kwacha deal if the ministry fails to make itself clear on the deal’s grey areas.
