Parliament is set to reconvene today to deliberate on the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government (Amendment) Bill.
The Bill seeks to amend the Presidential, Parliamentary and Local Government Elections Act (No. 10 of 2023), with the aim of allowing polling staff, security personnel and representatives of candidates and political parties to vote at the polling stations where they are deployed on election day.
Yesterday , the Malawi Electoral Commission-MEC and other stakeholders appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs to present concerns about the current law.
According to the current law, under Section 74, voters are only allowed to cast their ballots at the centre where they registered.
MEC disclosed that about 80,000 people are at risk of being deprived of their right to vote if the law is not amended.
