A renowned global child rights campaigner, Plan International has expressed dismay over the country’s failure to deal with cases of abuse against females on the internet.
At the back of such a situation, Plan International has made it a main focus as the world commemorates International Day of a Girl child which falls on 11th October.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Plan Internation Child Protection Officer for northern region, Silence Banda said the country is lagging behind in dealing with abuses against females online, something that is fueling low self esteem among them.
“It is something that is worrisome, and we have intensified awareness campaigns to end the challenges that girls are facing on the internet” said Banda.
On his part, one of the stakeholders in combating the vice, ICT expert with Mzuzu University, Misheck Nyirenda pointed out information gap and lack of law enforcement as causal factors fuelling the malpractice.
“Girls don’t come out to report the abuse because of lack information on where to report and how to report it. Malawi needs to reinforce such laws” said Nyirenda.
Meanwhile , Mary Chilima wife to Vice President Saulos Chilima has been appointed ambassador for #FreeToBeOnline campaign which aims at at ending cyber violence.
