Police counting the cost of damaged unit in Blantyre

Police operations in Blantyre are facing hurdles after people burnt a unit at flea market during the anti-government demonstration fracas last week saying the police will only return when the communities renovate the unit.

The police unit was set ablaze by unknown persons during the protests organized by former UTM party member Bon Kalindo.

A week down the line, Peter Mchizi, Spokesperson for Blantyre Police has told MIJ Online that the damage has resulted into piling up of cases at Blantyre police station.

“This would not have been the case if vandalism was not done on this structure. We were able to handle some cases and that meant a reduce workload for the main office’’ he said.

Meanwhile, Mchizi has said the police will go back to the location once the community has renovated its structure.

Mchizi has this far called on the citizenry to always cordially work with the men-in-uniform in times of disagreements and not to resort to destroying police properties.
