Authorities have disclosed that the country has experienced a 2 percent reduction in road accidents involving fuel tankers, indicating enhanced safety compliance in the industry.
The details were given by Regional Road Traffic Officer for the South, Madalitso Gunsalu during the observance of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, an event organized by International Haulage Brokers (IHB) in partnership with Petroleum Importers Limited (PIL).
He disclosed that there were 3,984 road accidents recorded in 2025, which led to 1,033 fatalities.
However, he emphasized that fuel tanker drivers were not accountable for any of these deaths, proving that it is feasible to transport fuel safely without fatalities when appropriate safety protocols are adhered to.
In addition, PIL General Manager Martin Msimuko urged transporters to make safety a top priority when dealing with fuel.
