Roads maintenance at risk as MERA holds 93 Billion Kwacha of levies

The Parliamentary Cluster on Public Infrastructure has informed members of parliament that the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority is in arrears to the Roads Funds Administration to the tune of 96 billion kwacha in fuel levy payments for road maintenance.

Under the Energy law, various levies are imposed on the sale of energy commodities to fulfill specific financial obligations benefiting the country, including the Road Levy, designated for road infrastructure development and repair.

Enoch Phale, Chairperson of the parliamentary committee on public infrastructure, revealed that according to the submission from the Roads Funds Administration secretariat, there has been a delay in the remittance of fuel levies by the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority.

Phale emphasized the crucial role of this funding, which should have been allocated to the Roads Funds Administration for the maintenance of roads.

He further expressed the committee’s intent to convene a roundtable discussion involving all concerned parties to address this issue.
