Natural disasters have claimed over thirty lives since the commencement of the rainy season in Malawi, authorities say.
In an interview with MIJ Online, Chipiliro Khamula, Spokesperson for the Department of Disaster Management said currently over fifteen thousand households have been affected by the natural disasters during this year’s rainy season.
According to Khamula, Mangochi, Ntchisi, Lilongwe, Zomba, Chikwawa, Nkhotakota, Machinga, Karonga, Mulanje and Nsanje are some of the councils that have been heavily affected.
Khamula has told us that the department has recorded a total of thirty-three deaths and 174 injuries so far.
Meanwhile, over thirteen thousand households have been reached with relief items, which represents 86 percent of the affected households.
